It’s crazy how the internet being just a breeding ground for “hot takes” has led to people not being able to handle fictional characters who do bad things. You’re supposed to come online and be scandalized that in a medieval kind of society a royal prince sexually assaulted someone of lower class as if that isn’t the most typical thing ever. While ignoring all the depth of character surrounding his behaviors. Some of you need to just read nonfiction if you want stories devoid of metaphor and analogy and characters with permission to be larger than reality. If liking Aegon makes me a real life rape apologist then enjoying horror movies my whole life surely has made me complicit in murder somehow 🙄🙄

While "cartoon show aimed at children" and "fiction about torture" are certainly two extreme ends of the spectrum, I believe they do show that the line for "we need to have critical discussions about the themes in here" lies somewhere, so... where does it lie?

hannibal depicts cannibalism without justifying it. i havent seen gravity falls but i bet it doesn't justify crime. i'm not criticising you for simply depicting torture. i'm not even criticising you for liking fictional depictions of torture. i'm critical of how you depict it.

i don't think you know what a theme is. having a character who endorses immoral things isn't a literary theme, that's just character motivation. it's when the story itself endorses those immoral things that it becomes an issue. and with torture, what qualifies as endorsement just doesn't come down to "torture is good", the far more insidious idea is "torture is useful". you can portray torture as a bad thing, but if it's portrayed as bad but useful, i'd still qualify it as apologia.

where do we draw the line? well, we could look at which myths and cultural ideas surrounding torture actually cause harm irl, and then avoid slapping a stamp of approval on those. i'd say that's a pretty reasonable place to start

Just to be clear that viral shit post I made was just a joke in the moment that I never expected to blow up but I do want to expand. The spirit of making fun of people who call themselves “critical” or “apologists” regarding “morally gray” or “evil” characters is not anti analytical. I’m pro analyzing fiction. It’s like my favorite activity. I’m against moralizing & treating fictional characters like real people on trial. I like Hannibal Lecter because he’s a fascinating character & he’s fun to psychoanalyze & Silence of the Lambs is a great book & movie & Hannibal is a great TV series but it would be insane to approach it based purely on the basis of like “is Hannibal a good person?” Like that’s an idiotic question & it doesn’t become less idiotic when you use less extreme examples. The real question isn’t “is Hannibal a morally good person?” it’s “what makes Hannibal interesting?”

Sympathizing with morally abhorrent characters is a major part of understanding & examining fiction & treating people like pariahs for enjoying darker themes in fiction is ridiculous but SO is acting like those themes don’t exist or the character Is Actually A Good Person if you Really Think About It. People who call themselves “apologists” are usually joking (I joke about it myself) but there are people who will justify away & obsess over why the villain they really like is ACTUALLY the victim / a good person (usually in response to the opposite side endlessly bashing their faves.)

Both sides of this spectrum are themselves anti analytical because the point of analyzing fiction is not to decide a neat little moral lesson it’s to discuss & examine a story.

Let's go with one I'm currently feral about (Pete/Vegas from Kinnporsche), a classic (Hannibal/Will), and one I feel creeping up on me (Mo Ran/Chu Wanning, like...I'm being held slightly at bay on this one by the books not being fully translated and me suffering through the agony of machine translation, but I feel in my soul that once I get to read a less choppy translation it's going to be a real problem.) first ever ship. I'm sure I had ships for baby's first fandom, the Dragonriders of Pern, but honestly I don't remember what they were - I was mostly just feral about the telepathic dragons. The first time I ever remember shipping online in like a fannish way would have been somewhere around the heyday of the WB, so it was probably either Spike/Buffy or Joey/Pacey both things I have spent hours and hours of my one wild and precious life yelling about on the internet. last song. I've been watching a lot of Game Changer lately and I've had the opening song from the improvised musical episode in my head for about three days straight and honestly, much as I like it, I'm beyond ready for my brain to move on to something else.

last movie. I rewatched All About Eve last week and it was, as always, impeccable. I'm tentatively lining up a movie night with friends this weekend to finally watch Everything Everywhere All At Once, and I'm so excited about it.

currently reading. I've been having trouble getting my brain out of fic mode and into book mode lately, so I just finished off a reread of the Captive Prince books as a sort of transition and I think maybe I'm ready to try reading another actual book again. Not sure what it will be. I'm also following along with the Moby Dick readalong at Whale Weekly but I'm a few installments behind. I've read it before, know that Melville takes his own sweet time getting around to his own story, and so can I.

currently watching. The aforementioned Game Changer as the show I watch with my partner, the Thai show Lovely Writer as my weekly watch with a friend, and for my watch-alone show I just started wuxia-nonsense Blood of Youth last night. I do like to have an English-language show going as well to watch while I do crafts or other fiddly things that keep me from reading subtitles, so I need to find a new one of those.

currently consuming. I just finished lunch - crackers, cheddar cheese, and summer sausage. My partner is on his way back from a trip to Home Depot to buy something or other to fix our toilet which has started to make an alarming wheezing sound, and he usually brings me back some form of checkout-line candy. So there's probably a Snickers in my near future.

Would I Survive the First Five Minutes??: Yes. I am not one of the yellow eyed demons special children, so...I'm solid

GOOD. We're finally getting what John told Dean before he died, but Sam should have been told...I mean, this is episode 10 of this season. that happened in 1. At the same time...because I'm apparently a Dean apologist for life, I can't imagine being told that you might have to kill the one person you've spent most of your life protecting. That if you fail to save them, YOU are going to have to kill them. That's gotta mess you up.

Oh shit. Blood splatter on the camera and everything. Poor girl having visions of Sam dying in an explosion.

We're also getting a little closure on the John got Ellen's husband killed during a hunt thing, which is also nice to see get brought back again, that hasn't just been dropped. All these fissures in what's left of these families is really sad to see

(Ohhhhhh, the girl who plays Ava was also Margot in Hannibal, that's where I've seen her)

Ellen had every opportunity and right to be petty about letting Dean know where Sam was, and I'm sure glad she didn't take it. I might be a Dean apologist, but something about Ellen being able to dangle that over him (though I don't exactly think she would, but she COULD) is excellent

This is a fucking terrible look...and it feels really really gross. They really should have cast a different actor for Gordon. I'm not even defending Gordon here, I don't like him or his actions. But you can have a hunter that's gone rogue, that's turned more than a little twisted in their pursuit of the monsters they all face, and ALSO not have it supposed to be a sort of jokey thing that the conventionally attractive, young white leads call the cops on a black man in the southern US

Sarah Jane still feeling that abandonment after all these years is truly heartbreaking. But it's something I have been thinking about during this rewatch. Truly nothing could compare to the time you spend with the Doctor, whether you're romantically entangled or strictly platonic. Rose knows it, Sarah Jane knows it, Donna will eventually get her "but I was going to be with you forever." And I honestly cannot decide whether it's better to have traveled with the Doctor and have to stop or to never have the opportunity at all.

OMG He's also Hercules Shipwright!!! HOW COULD I FORGET??? When he's talking to the Doctor at the pool, it's all I could HEAR! Half expected to hear him say "What a ridiculous dog" (though if he said it about K-9, I'd slap him) or express a never ending fear of sheep

Truly, I adore this kid who has a terrible attitude and who solves everything for the Doctor and crew. Amazing. He and K-9 were the true heroes of the day.

With every passing episode, I'm more and more convinced of that post. Rose and the Doctor can't do anything with Mickey on board now

Let me count the ways.....

Curse The Messenger: Do TERFs count as people...? They're going to have an issue with the fact that Eddie and Jessica are both lesbians even though Jessica is a whole trans. (I mean the whole thing is about as anti-TERF as you can get anyway, but I'm fully aware they don't have reading comprehension so I'm expecting it to go over their heads lol.) People will also get horsey about Fred using neopronouns, but tbh those people are just TERF Lite. Someone will probably accuse me of queerbaiting because Fred's AGAB will never be mentioned and xyr gender won't be explicitly labeled, and also xe're aroace which is enough on its own lmfao but that also probably won't be explicitly labeled. Oh also because Eddie and Jessica break up. It may or may not be said that I fridged Maddie and Dido, but at least in Dido's case that's not an unfair assumption at this point. People might try to say it's transphobic that Jessica tops. People might also say the relationship is abusive because they have kinky D/s sex. Might be accused of misogyny/lesbophobia because Eddie makes bad decisions and is Not Nice and has problems. People (racists) will find reasons to dislike Jessica, and one of them will probably be that she moved on from Maddie too quickly after her death. Sadly there is no white woman for them to decide Eddie should be with instead :'( People will pretend everyone is skinny (only Fred is, in this one) and probably whitewash them too. There might be some Fred/Eddie shipping, in which case people who ship that will of course be accused of perpetrating/celebrating/getting off on real actual real life incest for real in real life.

Gilded Verdict: LOL it's villain protagonists baby!! People will say I'm an abuse apologist, they will fight with each other about whether Evan or Lily is The Abuser (they both are), the prison abolitionism and ACAB-ism and the condemnation of judicial racism and prison slavery and profit motivated politics will go over people's heads and they'll instead say I glorified those things (because Evan gets mad pussy while doing them, and since all fiction is morality fable that should be taken as a reward for his behavior and therefore encouragement to replicate it /s). Also people will be so so so scared and catholic about the fact that the fictional sex the bad guys are having is written to be titillating and sexy to read, because they are doing it like bad guys and would be bad to do in real life (despite the fact that it is, in fact, completely impossible to do in real life) so obviously it's also bad to think about - especially if you're thinking hornily. There isn't technically cannibalism (except incidentally lol), but the Vibe is gonna be a lot like Hannibal so I expect similar stuff to what that got. There will be some people saying I'm trying to redeem Lily by making her in love / also a victim. There will be some people saying I'm villainizing abuse victims and she should be a good guy. People will say she and/or Evan have PDs, and other people will say that's an ableist thing to think. There will be butthurt white people twisting themselves in knots trying to find some way to say I'm Racist Actually without showing their hand because these two are the only white people who haven't been murdered (yet). There will be more talk of queerbaiting because Evan is bi but elects not to act on it for sociopolitical reasons. There will be accusations of biphobia because of that also. People will want to fuck them both in fiction, and other people will accuse them of being real actual abusers/racists/transphobes/capitalists for real in real life.

The Vanishing Point: Some people will insist Angel is also an abuser (he's not). Some people will insist Dido is an abuser (she's not). Some people will be so fucking mad that Dido has actual schizophrenia for real and magic / the power of true love can't fix it. I can't go into detail here because there are some spoilers I wanna keep close to my chest for this one, but rest assured a lot of people will hate Dido's fucking guts. Perhaps even the same people who thought she was fridged for CTM will fervently claim she deserves to die and go to hell forever. Other people will call those people misogynists because they obviously believe that women [spoiler]. Will once again get accused of queerbaiting because Angel is bi but in a committed, exclusive, long term relationship with a woman. People will metaphorically fist fight each other in Denny's parking lots over whether or not Angel is a good dad (he's not, but he's trying his best). If the series is popular enough, some people will be BIG mad I set up not one but two cliffhangers and then published a prequel lol. Look at my nonlinear narrative boy. And Ferris uses it/its pronouns. Oh! And I might get accused of being a MRA because in this fictional subculture of a fictional society on a fictional world misandry exists sometimes.

Latchkey Craft: Some people still discourse about if polyamory is, like, morally okay or whatever. If you can believe it. Anyway, Angel is polyfidelious with two other men both of which are nonbinary and one of which whose pronouns change, so that'll be another thing for TERF Lites to shit over. Jessica is also revealed to be polyamorous in this one. People will say she was cheating on Eddie all along (she wasn't). Eddie and Jessica will get back together but their problems won't be solved, which will be called either romanticizing unhealthy relationships and/or lesbophobia and/or racism. The good dad v bad dad debate continues. Some people will think [spoiler] is too happy, which honestly fair, but they will also insist it's poorly done despite it having been set up to happen all the way from CTM because it's not to their taste. Other people will find some way to make those people's dislike into bigotry somehow. Some people might say it's racist because Jessica kills someone. With a gun! Some people will think [different spoiler] is too sad, which I will privately snicker about like an evil little guy. Queerbaiting again because Angel ends the series single. There will be a revenge v justice battle about Lily being killed (unforch these concepts are not mutually exclusive so that will be quite fruitless, and never ending). Some people might be disappointed that Fred doesn't confront Angel on-page. I preemptively invite those people to write fanfiction. People will White Knight about Kapua and Wapo.

Not connected to any book of the series in particular, but I'm also expecting people to harass me to come out despite the fact that I already am lmfao.

In actuality though tbh I don't expect to get popular enough to have discourse. But wouldn't that be cool though? For a variable definition of 'cool' I suppose lmfao.

I want to say this will be my last post complaining about Stella, but that's a lie. Seeing people use faulty reasoning and ad hominem attacks fuels my pettiness.

The disingenuous nonsense of labeling people who want stella to be a layered character as abuse apologists or dumb is idiotic. Beatrice Horseman is an example I've seen floated around. I loved learning about Beatrice's past and not once did it make me like her. I sympathized with her, but I never liked her. I'm still glad that Bojack dumped her ass.

I'm not asking for stella to get 5 seasons of development, I just want consistent build up. I hate hannibal lector, because he hurt my baby Will, but he's an amazing character. He's also abusive as fuck.

Just because you disagree with how others perceive a show, doesn't mean you get to insult them and throw around serious labels. They're cartoons. Get a grip on reality. If you think Stella's properly developed and a good representation of an abusive partner, cool. I don't and I get to discuss my view of that.

Stella gets villainized as a child so we sympathize with Stolas. Him crying at her vicious behavior is unnecessary. She's just a bitch from birth? Okay, but that moment was clearly for laughs and not serious. Being in a loveless, political marriage was sympathetic enough.

It's difficult toeing the line between comedy and drama, and helluva boss is not succeeding. You can't play off Stella's abuse for gags and suddenly add plot to it.

Idk, being called an abuse apologist because I want stella to be a more interesting abuser is a new one. Fiction isn't real life. Helluva boss is telling a story and that means their characters need to be fleshed out and consistent.

There are proshippers who make nothing but wholesome safe for work content. (I have sfw content, but a lot is nsfw.)

Guess what else I don’t like? Lolisho! It weirds me out, but my “weirded out” reaction is nothing like the rage, dread and disgust I felt when I had to report actual CSEM. My rage goes through the roof when people harm real kids. I will never see lolisho as on the same level as CSEM, ever.

Being proship isn’t about what you ship, it’s your behavior towards and around shipping.

I don’t care how shitty someone treats fictional characters in fanwork. I can scroll away and not click it. I care how real people treat other real people and fandom antis hurt real people over fictional characters.

Fandom antis think they’re so slick with their “I’m anti-what?” bullshit when nothing they do is protecting real kids from real abusers.

They claim there’s a difference between engaging dark media and glorifying it, yet they treat any depiction as glorifying. Then they’ll go watch a media that’s as problematic as some fanworks and be fine with it. There are fandom antis who watch nbc Hannibal and throw homophobic slurs at Bryan Fuller, the gay show runner, because he agrees that fiction isn’t the same as reality and doesn’t have to follow the same rules as reality.

They think seeing it will make someone think it’s okay when it’s usually a predator grooming someone into believing it’s okay…and the blame is always on the predator.

They claim the media can be used to groom. But anything can be used to groom.

Kids need to stay out of adult spaces and learn to blacklist and mute tags. I can write something gross and tag it to shit and back, but that’s useless if people ignore the tags, click anyway and spread it to audiences it isn’t meant for.

Fandom antis abuse real people over fictional content they can choose to avoid. They’re some of the nastiest bullies I’ve encountered anywhere. Their disingenuous behavior disgusts me so much. They’re little wannabe fascists who drank TERF juice and now they think they’re warriors out to protect people from something that most wouldn’t see if it wasn’t shoved in their face by fandom antis.

And guess who gets hurt the most by fandom antis?

Marginalized creators.

Oh, fandom antis will claim they’re part of that minority as if that absolves them of harm, but it doesn’t and never will.

They’re bullies and abuse apologists. There is nothing good about them.

I hate every single fandom anti. There is no excuse for their behavior and when I see them I block on sight.

If fiction affected reality as much as fandom antis claim, society would be completely unlivable.

Are there problems with how things are portrayed that need addressing? Yes, absolutely! Things like poor disability rep, poor queer rep, the sexualization of children in Hollywood, etc, that needs addressing.

Screaming at someone because their Inucest fanfic or their BakuDeku doujinshi grossed you out isn’t going to address the issue at all.

i think we focus too much on whether or not hannibal is forgivable or not. he isnt, and he is a monster, but hes also likeable and i think its okay for him to be both. its fiction he was Made To Be Liked

oh, i agree. both will and hannibal have done things that are unforgivable. no character is absolutely perfect and moral (and most definitions of morality are about personal perception anyways). characters who are the most complex and interesting are ones that are deeply flawed but deeply relatable because that's how most people are irl. hannibal is the extreme but perfect epitome of this. we know he's evil bc he manipulates and murders people, but it's the heartbreakingly human facets of him (his desire to be understood, to have a family, and even to deny being in love until he destroys himself for love) that make us as the audience care about him. that's just good character development and writing. but more and more nowadays in fandom and online spaces, people feel they must be "moral" in their media consumption which is fucking ridiculous. so when people go to extreme lengths to defend hannibal and say "he did nothing wrong," (some going as far to say will was a bitch for not running away with him and for breaking hannibal's heart) i roll my eyes (sorry hannibal apologists) because that actually takes away from him. he DID do something wrong and that's part of what makes him so compelling. i hate him. i love him. i understand him. i would fight him in real life. all of these things exist together because hannibal is one of the greatest characters ever created. when i say i will never forgive him for things i mean that i will never excuse them or ignore them to make me feel better about liking him or about loving hannigram. yes, he abused will in s1. yes, i want them to be together in the end. some people can't live with those two things being true.

There’s a difference between feeling sympathy for an actual human being that has gone through actual abuse, and a television character who was written to be an awful person, who abused others in turn, terrorized his step sister, and almost beat one of his peers to death with his fists. The Duffers wrote a villain. They called him a villain. They confirmed that Billy was racist. Whether or not a person hates Billy has nothing to do with how compassionate or sympathetic they can be towards actual humans who are far more complex and nuanced than Billy could ever hope to be.

It’s the same as people who love ‘evil’ characters like Hannibal Lecter or The Joker. Liking them doesn’t mean you condone evil in real life. Our fictional preferences do not reflect perfectly on real world interaction.

So, first of all, please tell this to all of the people who come into Billy's tag and accuse us of being racist abuse apologists (when many of Billy's fans have faced abusive environments themselves). It doesn't feel great to be accused of certain things just because of how you react to certain characters, does it?

Also, that's how you see Billy, and that's fine, if a bit simplistic. That's not how his fans see him, in particular fans who have dealt with abuse before. After all, JKR also called Draco Malfoy a villain but meant for us to have compassion for him in the end (something his fans picked up on long before book 6, I might add). That was technically a "twist", so she's quite harsh on Draco in all of her interviews prior to book 6, then admits she had it planned all along but didn't want to give it away by saying something. But it was in the writing if you paid attention.

The Duffer's have created a gradient of different characters about whom they've said a lot of different things. They also said that in earlier drafts of either S2 or S3, Billy and Steve became friends, and it's hard for me to imagine that they'd have even considered that if they thought Billy was irredeemable. Everything else, well - Billy was a teenage boy dealing with an abuser that no one else in his life acknowledged as such. The one person who could have taught him love left him with said abuser. If those pieces are ones you're comfortable ignoring when evaluating him, that's fine. But I would not ignore the fact that Billy did not like killing people when the MF forced him, it was not something he wanted or enjoyed and I would remember that when considering his fight with Steve (and the tears he shed during it) and his fight with Lucas. You are allowed to flatten and simplify the narrative as much as you want, but the people who see the nuances aren't just making them up because they want to have sex with Billy, or whatever bs reason the antis have come up with today.

It's fine if you don't like Billy, but I would say that it's not super compassionate to the real people who love him to come for him over and over again with takes that generally have no basis in canon and that do not advance our understanding of him and that are clearly written just to upset people who do like the character (Billy was never homophobic, but I've seen that accusation leveled at him many times). Perhaps that is where my post came from. Nonetheless, you're right. Real people are always much more nuanced than characters and I would suggest that everyone in the fandom remember that.

Uhhhhh, maybe to any other fandom this would sound strange, but not in this one! I know basically most of you are comfort horror movies ppl fsdjhfksjd and hannibal nbc it's not even that horror so..

I guess that this show is, for me, very comforting bc it's focused on ppl who have too much inside, everything starts to leak out. There is no real urgency except the ones that you create. It's like that type of cold you willingful go in to feel something, that little bit of discomfort that sooths you bc it means you are alive and it takes away yourself from the tyranny of your mind.

Hannibal NBC deals with the nasty and asks you to embrace it.

..... and also it's chokeful of metaphors, quiet storytelling, amazing acting etc etc

but i go for comfort bc i go for comfort into the dark. you can heavy breathe in the dark.

I am a city person fhdksj sorry. I wouldnt mind living in the mountains but 1 i like to bikecycle and... it's too hard to bike going uphill hkdfjhsjs 2 i dont like being in cars and if you live in mountains you are not gonna find all that you need, you'll need to go to another city. nope. not for me.

I am not a big city person, I like the size of my city: big enough to have anything you want, small enough that in 40 mins i can be on the other side of it with my bike.
